Fashion Business Owner Musings: You Don’t Have to Get it Right Every Time

Dear Designers,

Earlier this week I posted a graphic on the StartUp FASHION Instagram that said:

You don’t have to get it right every single time. Just keep going.

And boy did it go over well.

I got a lot of private messages about it. And honestly I’m so glad.

Because getting down on ourselves when things aren’t going as planned is one of the biggest hurdles to reaching success.

The fact is, if you’re doing it right, running a business is full of missteps. Sometimes things work, sometimes they don’t. But it’s the act of trying that makes you a good business person.

It’s the act of holding on to the idea that you’re not worthy or your not able whenever something goes wrong, that makes you an unsuccessful business person.

That mindset is disastrous.

But I get it. I understand how it happens. Most of us are entering into the world of business without a lot of experience running our own brands. And experimentation can be scary and nerve-wracking. Then, when we work up the guts to try something and it doesn’t work, it feels crushing.

What we need to remember is that it’s never going to be totally smooth sailing. It’s never going to be 100% great. We’re never going to get it right every single time.

So when you’re high, stay high. Ride that wave of excitement and confidence. But when you’re low, don’t stay there. Remember that it’s up and down. Sometimes you get it right and sometimes you get it wrong. But the important thing is that you’re trying at all.

Lots of love and encouragement,
