Fleshing out your ideas and conveying them to the people who will help you bring them into fruition is best done through skillful fashion illustration. For some designers, this seems to come more naturally, while for others it proves to be a bit of a challenge.
Whether you plan to start your own line or whether you want to work for someone else’s label, excellent sketching ability is something that is pretty much expected of you. However your skills don’t need to be perfect; creating your own style and adding your personal spin to your croquis is part of the process.
One way to help develop your skills is to register for an expensive fashion illustration class at a local college. Another way would be to attend a fashion illustration meetup, like the one currently run by Would You Rock This?

The Fashion Drawing Session, held in New York, is described as an “open draw where you can simply practice drawing a live model at your own pace in a friendly environment of talented people like yourself.” Not a bad idea, right?
Here’s how it works:
Price: $15.00 per person
We’ll start with quick 5-minute model poses to loosen up then move into longer timed poses for more detailed illustrations. The model will change outfits periodically.
The fashion drawing sessions are an ‘open draw’ where you can simply practice at your own pace in a friendly environment of talented people like yourself and…
- Learn from other illustrators.
- Discuss the fashion industry.
- Plus, get feedback on your work
Located somewhere other than New York? Well, unfortunately, this meetup is currently only happening in the fashion capital. But why let that discourage you? Here’s a novel idea: Create your own! R
