Fashion Business Owner Musings: Done is Better Than Perfect

We’ve all heard this productivity quip: Done is better than perfect.

We usually hear this and think, I know, I know . . .

But rarely do we listen.

Why? Because we want things to be exactly as we imagine them to be. The “perfect” we’re after seems like an absolutely legitimate goal. We don’t want anything to be sub-par. We have a vision for our fashion business and want it created exactly as it exists in our heads.

So we wind up delaying things because, while we understand in theory that getting these things done is a better outcome than holding off until they’re just right, we don’t usually act on that. Instead, we tell ourselves things are not quite ready yet and we’ll just hold off until “fill in the blank” is just right.

Well, guess what I did this week? I listened and implemented that quip. And, seriously, it was one of the most productive weeks I’ve had in a really long time.

For real, it was a game-changer.

It’s funny what happens when you listen to your own advice, huh?

Something came over me this week and I thought to myself, “Stop waiting for this to be just right. It’s been on your task list for too long. Just do it already.”

Here’s what I did in two days:

  • Recorded three videos for IGTV
  • Wrote a website page for an upcoming workshop we’re launching
  • Set up a series of interviews for our soon-to-launch podcast
  • Wrote a 1000-word blog post in addition to my usual weekly musing
  • Outlined and updated our group coaching program for the next group of students

Umm…hair toss.

I got a lot done, yes. But there’s something else. Did you notice something about that list? These are all important, big picture tasks that move the business forward, not busy work that doesn’t have a direct impact on our growth.

By stopping myself from wanting things to be “just right,” I moved forward with important projects and made it OK that things were not perfect.

And that’s really powerful for the growth of my business.

Where are you using this excuse and holding up the growth in your own fashion business?

Do you recognize the “perfectionist procrastination” in your own work?

What’s not getting done because you think it’s not good enough yet?

Identify the important areas of your business that you’re not growing and remind yourself that…

Done is better than perfect.

But this time, listen. And take action.

Lots of love and encouragement,
