Fashion Business Owner Musings: Make Space for Possibility

Dear Designers,

You make a plan, you get to work, you share it with the world. But coming from the other side, is silence. And you weren’t expecting that.

You weren’t expecting that because you believe in what you’re doing. You weren’t expecting that because you so deeply want people to love it. You weren’t expecting that and now you’re questioning everything. Every idea, every decision, every plan.

This has happened to every single one of us. From failed launches to events with no RSVPs, we’ve all attempted and we’ve all flopped. It’s a part of doing business and that won’t change.

But what can change is how we approach our next idea.

What if we left more room for possibility?

What if we held space in our minds, in our hearts, and in our plans for things to go differently?

What if we try not to hold too tightly to certain expectations of what will be and instead open ourselves up to what might be, what is, and then, what could be.

When you have too clear a picture of what you expect to happen after putting something out into the world, and it doesn’t happen as you’d envisioned, the weight of that disappointment can be debilitating. It hurts when people are not nearly as interested in your work as you thought they would be. And when something hurts, we tend to avoid it.

However, if instead you can find a way to strip some of those expectations away, and put your work out there leaving space for possibility, you are now in a completely different mindset. And you know how important mindset is for happiness and success.

Think about it this way– a quiet launch becomes a BETA test for your new concept. A small RSVP list becomes an intimate event meant to more deeply connect with your community and customers.

The lesson here is that finding a balance between having a clear picture of how it will all work out and allowing yourself space to accept what is and make it work for you, is the only way to get good at not giving up on your ideas.

And that’s the goal, right? To continue to have the opportunity to share your ideas through your talents, your strengths, and your work.

Lots of love and encouragement,
