Fashion Business Owner Musings: Success Comes From Repetition

It took me 6 years to go from blogger to profitable business.

That’s six years of blogging several times a week. Six years of working other jobs that weren’t as exciting to me. Six years of improving my confidence and believing that I am capable of growing a business from nothing to something. Six years of teaching myself what I needed to know. Six years of failures, big and small.

But throughout those six years there was one thing I knew . . .

Success would come if I kept doing what needed to be done. 

I’m not saying it was easy.

I’m not saying that I knew exactly what success was going to look like.

I’m saying that I knew that repetition would work in my favor.

I kept writing and publishing blog posts 3 times a week.

I kept going to work every day knowing that it was paying my bills and simultaneously allowing me to go after my dreams and goals.

I kept working on my confidence, reminding myself that I am a smart and capable person, even when I was having a really hard time believing it.

I kept buying books and watching videos and taking classes so that I could learn as much as possible about entrepreneurship, marketing, overcoming self doubt, finances, and everything else.

I was on repeat. And eventually it paid off.

But had I stopped when it felt like I was spinning my wheels, I’d still be at a job working for someone else, anxious to be doing something I was passionate about.

I get it, it’s exhausting.

How many times can you keep doing the same thing over and over again?

The answer?

As many times as you need to until it works.

Because each time you do something, you learn.

And you use what you learn to improve what you’re doing the next time.

So yes, I kept blogging over and over while trying to build a community. With each blog post I learned more about my budding audience and I learned more about the things I should be blogging about. And I learned how to really zero in on my voice as a writer. And I learned about SEO and Google Analytics and a whole bunch of other stuff that would never have becomes lessons if I hadn’t kept repetitively blogging.

Listen, I know this journey is challenging. I know that it can sometimes seem like you keep trying, flopping, getting up, trying again, and nothing is changing . . .

But it is changing. You’re changing.

You’re learning and improving and growing.

And learning, improving, and growing is how you get from a hopeful dream to an accomplished goal.

Being on repeat is not a bad thing, as long as you’re paying attention along the way.
