So recently I heard something that I had a hard time believing. I heard that there is a yarn manufacturer in Philadelphia. Now, I should tell you I was born, raised, and educated in Philly. I went to school for textiles for goodness sake, and never did I know about Huntingdon Yarn Mill. I spent some time on their website and learned that they specialize in Metallic Yarn Combining, Skein Dyeing, and Novelty Yarn Twisting. Pretty nice, right? They also have low minimums, are family operated, and, obviously, manufacture in the United States (you all know how much I love that!) Here’s a little blurb from their site that I think sums them up nicely.
Huntingdon Yarn Mill has been operating in Northeast Philadelphia for over 80 years. The mill provides a facility for three important yarn-refining processes. Raw materials are subjected to these processes in order to generate novelty yarns. The company caters to a high-end niche market that uses the yarns to produce fine clothing, crafts, and upholstery fabrics. Huntingdon Yarn Mill is the only operating manufacturing company of its kind in the United States.
Now, on my next trip home to Philly, perhaps I should try to make an appointment; I would love to see their operation, explore what they have to offer, and, for my own weaving work, perhaps get a yarn card?…….
